i lived in france on exchange when i was in high school, and the french high school senior boys LOVED rage against the machine and wanted me to translate all their lyrics, especially killing in the name of. it was surprising how much understanding of US history was required to make sense of the lyrics. “the same that burned crosses” was not a concept that made sense to french youth. we had much better luck with led zeppelin - “gonna make you sweat gonna make you groove” has universal appeal.
