this man is a hero. this is dr. leroy carhart, a nebraska doctor who today announced that he would continue to provide third-term abortions in kansas. he practices in nebraska but has performed late-term abortions at dr. tiller’s clinic. he is a retired air force officer who participated in both supreme court lawsuits about partial birth abortion. (he’s the carhart in stenberg v. carhart and gonzales v carhart). in 1991, the carhart’s farm burned down and 17 horses and a dog and cat were killed. carhart believes it was arson, and after the fire he significantly expanded his abortion practice, saying ‘I realized that if you’re going to do abortions, you’re going to be a target of attack, so you might as well do a lot of them.’ there have been multiple incidents at his clinic, including a fire there in january of this year.
