Children traumatized by Mexico drug war killings →
Mexico’s drug war is bursting into the lives of young children, especially in violent northern border cities where they are becoming traumatized by the sight of bloodied bodies and daylight shootouts. Schools in Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez and even the upscale business city of Monterrey have seen drug cartel battles break out in nearby streets, and young children are alarming their parents with...
OMFG this is horrific →
(via thecurvature):
amandaw: Don’t read the comments, either. They’re just as horrifying as what happened in the post. Abled folk ride in to save you from the lying crip who’s obviously just trying to stir up shit, don’t you know REAL disabled people have caregivers or else REAL disabled people know to ALWAYS call for advance arrangements (which would have changed the situation, how?) or else…

some actual quotes:
“It’s dangerous to make broad generalizations. But it is true. Women tend more to think emotionally than men do. And our government today would be much more conservative had women never been allowed to vote.”
“Ann is absolutely correct. If we look at all the presidential elections since 1920, not one Democrat would have been elected to the White House....

still tasty will tell you whether or not you need to throw that out or if you can go ahead and eat it. some things i have learned:
the eggs in the fridge are ok for up to 3-5 weeks, even if the date on the package has passed.
the pizza left out overnight goes in the trash even if it smells ok.
if you want to keep a box of chocolates for more than 2 weeks, throw it in the fridge.

that AIG resignation letter
i’ve been thinking a lot about the letter from the guy resigning from AIG that was in the nytimes earlier this week. since my first reaction was white hot incandescent anger, i’ve been trying to sort out what about it made me so upset in a way that could be typed into tumblr instead of just screaming incoherently.
some salient points from the letter:
he was not involved in the...
this is a good step
“Nationwide, 774 homeless people have been victims of violence since 1999, including 217 who were killed,” says the National Coalition for the Homeless per the Daily News. “The number of attacks rose from 142 in 2006 to 160 in 2007 and they’re expected to rise even higher in 2008.”
And with homelessness in LA County drastically increasing and “an emerging pattern...

the strip search case
the background of the case:
Savana Redding still remembers the clothes she had on — black stretch pants with butterfly patches and a pink T-shirt — the day school officials here forced her to strip six years ago. She was 13 and in eighth grade. An assistant principal, enforcing the school’s antidrug policies, suspected her of having brought prescription-strength ibuprofen pills to school. One of...

jss: I’ve known several people who identify themselves as feminists and believe that part of being a feminist includes objectifying and belittling men the way women have been objectified and belittled for centuries. They believe that by doing this, they will level the playing field. So…I’m just sayin’…some people get it wrong.

organ donation
i read that natasha richardson’s organs were donated and how someone attributed as a family friend said that it was a very natasha thing to do. i also read this article in ‘real simple’ (shut up) about a 15 year old girl who died and whose organs were donated.
organ donation is a great thing. there’s a significant shortfall of organs and the list of potential recipients is...
this is not how to do it
i posted recently on how shrinking prison budgets were leading to reforms that are both progressive and fiscally smart. well, via t-n coates, it’s not going so well everywhere:
In Georgia, Republican state legislators proposed a bill that would make inmates liable for all their health-care costs relating to medication. Public-health advocates opposed the bill on the grounds that it could...

more tactics for defusing racist/sexist "jokes"
After Liz Carpenter worked for the Johnson administration she wrote a book about her experiences working at the White House. The book was out for a while, did pretty well. One evening she met Arthur Schlesinger at a cocktail party. He came over to her and smiled and said “Like your book Liz. Who wrote it for you?” Now, clearly dear Arthur meant this as his little joke. If she had...
